Welcome to the Ettenmoors, the place in Middle-earth where the conflict between good and evil is always raging on. Here, the Free Peoples of the world constantly battle the dark servants of Sauron. In The Lord of the Rings Online, this conflict is known as monster play. For players wishing to take part in this ongoing battle, there are a few requirements that must be met first.
The Ettenmoors is a large, separate region that is comparable in size to The Shire. Players on both sides have “safe zones” on opposite sides of the Ettenmoors region. New players entering monster play start out in these areas. There are several objectives that players will have as they enter this most dangerous of areas in Middle-earth. These objectives include defeating your enemies in battle, completing PvE (player versus environment) tasks or quests, and keeping or taking control of several keeps or areas within the Ettenmoors.
The Classes
When starting out as a monster player, there are six different classes to choose from. Make sure you choose wisely, for you only get one character of each class per server. Each different class can reflect a different playstyle.
The Orc Defiler
The orc Defiler has learned of plagues and venoms, and can put them to use restoring the forces.
The Orc Reaver
Savage, brutal, and deadly, the Reaver is at home on the field of battle—and few places else. Learn more abou the Reaver
The Uruk Blackarrow

Logging in to the Ettenmoors
Players who wish to jump into monster play must level up a regular character to level 10 before the monster play button will become useable from the character selection screen. Hit that, choose a class and off you go into the Ettenmoors! Unlike the PvE side of the game, when you first log into your monster player character you will notice that you are already level 50. You are not however as powerful as you will be able to become.
To make your character become more powerful, you will need to gain Destiny Points and Infamy. Destiny Points are gained by killing creatures or players and by completing various quests throughout the region. Destiny Points are used to purchase various traits and skills that will become unlocked as you gain more Infamy. There is only one way to gain Infamy; by killing players of the opposing side. Depending on the rank of the player you kill, you will gain different amounts of Infamy per kill and as you gain more infamy, you will gain ranks, which will unlock more skills and traits for you to purchase and use.
Travel and Maps
The main way a monster player, or Creep, travels through the Ettenmoors is via his or her legs, but that is not the only way. As players complete tasks for the various NPCs throughout the region, they will gain credit for the number of quests the have completed in each area of the Ettenmoors.
Once you have completed anough of these quests in the region, you will be told to go speak with one of the NPC’s who will reward you with one of three kinds of maps and Destiny Points. As you continue to complete quests, you will gain more maps, some with faster cooldown timers and different locations. The five different maps are: Lugazag, Tol Ascarnen, Tirith Rhaw, Isendeep, and Grimwood Lumber Camp. These are the five different control points that players will be battling over. Depending on which grade of map you use, you will be located closer or further away from one of these areas.
Free Peoples, or Freeps, do not get maps of the Ettenmoors like Creeps do. Freeps must use the horses they have earned or purchased in their travels through other regions of Middle-earth.
You are now part of the monster play experience. Go forth and take part in one of the most unique activities you will find in Middle-earth!
